My father taught me to be honest, curious and kind. He shared his opinions and emotions generously, raising me to be as proud of my tears as I am of my accomplishments. I often feel my dad beside me in spirit. I hear his voice almost daily. “Go get ‘em, tiger,” he says, forever encouraging and leading by example.
My children’s father has taught them to be loving, persistent, patient and positive. Through his words and deeds, my husband guides and applauds our adult “kids.” He also catches them when they fall. Like his own father and mine, he champions and celebrates them for who they are — not just who he wants them to be.
Although I believe my father and husband are unique and wonderful, I know there are countless men out there providing love, laughter and encouragement to their wives and children — even in the toughest of times. If you are one of them, I hope you feel celebrated today. And if you know one of them, I hope you tell them how much they matter — today and always.

Whether you’re celebrating, traveling or just dreaming about future fun, here are some exciting new recreational options for dads (and moms!) to enjoy with young people with disabilities:
Glass-bottom boats. A popular and historic Florida state park will soon offer rides on a wheelchair-accessible glass bottom boat. It will be the first of its kind with dedicated, convenient access for people with mobility impairments. Long time coming, and anxiously awaited.
Accessible beaches. Grateful for this woman’s journey to make our town more inclusive and wheelchair-friendly for people of all abilities.
Vizmoo. This company leverages virtual reality technology to make therapy more engaging and entertaining for people with neurodevelopmental challenges. They’re looking for feedback and input from parents/caregivers, therapists and educators. Give yours here.
Museums for all. Use this program to access free admission to hundreds of museums across the U.S. with your SNAP or EBT card. This special program makes sight-seeing more affordable for families with disabilities.
Love on wheels. Cycling enthusiasts in Pennsylvania teamed up to create Joy Riders, a group of volunteers offering free bike rides to people with cerebral palsy and other disabilities. No more sitting on the sidelines. Maybe your town needs something similar to help people with disabilities feel the wind in their hair.
In preparing this week’s issue of Another Normal, I went down the Satya Nadella rabbit hole. Microsoft’s new Chairman speaks eloquently about the challenges of raising children with disabilities and credits his son and daughter for helping him to become more empathetic — a better father, business leader and human being. I could listen to him for hours. Perhaps he’ll inspire someone you know.
