Parental Priorities in Difficult Times

The world was upended again this past week, as the U.S. Capitol was violently attacked. It’s something I never dreamed I’d see in this lifetime. And it was especially heartbreaking to experience with our children.

I had planned to write about another topic this week, but believe it’s more important to address this issue today.

Parents want our children, regardless of their age or ability, to develop a healthy moral compass and live without fear and anxiety. In the wake of last week’s events, experts agree that limiting media exposure, welcoming questions and discussion, and highlighting the helpers are important priorities for parents during difficult times. Regardless of their intellectual or developmental stage, young people need parents to reassure them that they’re safe. We must also provide honest answers to their questions.

Sadly, the Capitol breach joins a long list of overwhelming events that have taken place over the past year in the U.S. Sharing your feelings and modeling open communication will help young people with and without disabilities process this event and manage their concerns about whatever the future may hold.
